3D Christians

This past week I had the privilege of attending the See Salt student conference in Myrtle Bach, SC, and while we were there we learned about being 3D Christians.

I’ve seen a few 3 dimensional movies, but I never really understood how it worked. While I still would not consider myself a 3D expert, I now know that the third dimension is depth, which is in addition to height and width. Without depth the thrill of watching a 3D movie goes away, and we are left with an ordinary movie.

The Christian life also requires depth. We must first grow up in our relationship with Jesus, and then grow out in our relationship with each other. But it is imperative that we grow deep as well. This depth comes as we grow in our Christian lives and become who God wants us to be. Biblically, we need to grow this way:

Grow up: Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind (Matthew 22:37).
Grow out: Love thy neighbor as thyself (Matthew 22:39).
Grow deep: Grow in grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ (II Peter 3:18).

Just for fun, here is a song we sang at See Salt called 2B 3D:

You produce us in your image, but it’s hard to understand
How we can go from where we are to all that you have planned

Reaching up so we can know you, reaching in so we can grow,
Reaching out so we can show you
To those who need to go, who need to go higher, deeper, wider—
It’s going take all three to be what we’re to be.
We need to go higher, deeper, wider—
It’s beyond our comprehension how you can take us to another dimension.

To ignore part of the image can make our lives fall flat
Miss the depth of your design—don’t want to live like that.
