Bragging Rights

Do you know someone who is constantly bragging about himself? Nobody wants to be around that person because everything always comes back to them—they have a better report card, caught a bigger fish, or make more money. These people are selfish, and their bragging is a real turnoff.

Paul wrote in Galatians 6:14 “God forbid that I should brag, except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.” We shouldn’t brag about our gifts or accomplishments because they all come from the Lord anyway (James 1:17), and when we brag about them we are taking the credit and praise that God deserves.

But there is something that is good to brag about, and that is the cross of Jesus; more specifically, His death and resurrection. Those events changed the world forever. Everything prior to it was changed, and everything after it is changed. People can now have access to God, prayer, forgiveness, salvation, and heaven.

And the cross sets Jesus apart from other religions. No other deity was present from the beginning, died for His people, came back from the dead, and is still alive today. If you believe in Jesus Christ you should be bragging about Him—telling people how great He is and what He can do for them. We can’t brag about ourselves and Jesus at the same time, so you have to pick one.
